While walking through the local farmer’s market and purchasing some lovely produce from the Cooley Family Farm, among other vendors, we were approached by Obama supporter wanting to know if everyone in our party was registered to vote. After telling her that we have been registered voters for a number of years, she asked if we knew about the Obama regional office opening at 514 Main St. We had heard about it, we told her. She then asked if we knew about the opening reception taking place at 1PM today, with former US Senator Birch Bayh as a guest speaker. That we hadn’t heard about, so we took a flyer and told her we would be there. We finished our shopping and went home.

When it was time to go, I headed towards downtown Lafayette. I parked the car in the 5th street garage and walked over to the address, 514 Main St. The office was setup in a decent size space, easily accommodating those that were in attendance. By the time the speakers started, the place was packed with local officials, young Obama supporters outfitted in the various Obama clothing lines, and several people draped in the campaign garb for local people running.

As usual, I recorded the whole thing. Below you will find MP3s of the entire speech, and each speaker’s speech as its own separate file. Further down, we included a short list of things we learned from attending this event. Enjoy listening to your local politicians.

At the first Farmers’ Market of the year, May 1st, we ran into some of the people doing surveys and interviews about starting a Lafayette Food Co-Op. We decided to do an interview ourselves. We talked to Cody, who is leading the way with this project.

It turns out there used to be one here for thirty years that finally died in the mid-90s. It’s time to bring this idea back to downtown Lafayette. If anyone has a inexpensive place that would need a little fixing up, please contact them!

The co-op is in the very early planning stages, so be on the lookout for further developments. If you want to help out with this project, please contact them at the above address. We are very excited about the possibilities with this project. Please support local food, media, and community.

Well, we finally had the time to expand The Media Collective beyond one project! We also wanted to have a showcase/feature show, and finally had the opportunity to interview something unique happening in the area. After getting a phone call from a friend about two brothers who were hitchhiking across America and making a documentary, we decided to set out an make them the first interview.

A few things first: We apologize for the quality of the audio. We sat outside (too beautiful of a day to pass up [and one person did not have shoes]). We only had one lapel microphone. For the setup we did have, we’re pretty pleased.

Will and Tim, two brothers making a feature length documentary called Hitching for Humanity, set out on a journey in search of random acts of kindness and to show the world that beautiful people still exist. They started in Massachusetts and plan on ending up in California. This interview covers their stop in West Lafayette, Indiana on the campus of Purdue University. They plan on submitting the film to Slam Dance and where ever else the people take it.
